Whether it’s nerves, embarrassment, or thinking that you can run from your problems, many people decide that they are not going to show up for court hearings. However, what they might not know, or don’t care, is that they are only making things more difficult for them and their family.
Skipping out on court leads to more charges, longer sentencing, and added expenses. Knowing how rare it is for criminals to hide, it’s unwise to miss your appearance.
Warrant for Arrest
Maybe you were distracted by your radio, or you committed a minor traffic violation, like rolling through a stop sign. However, once the officer who pulled you over, runs your license, they’ll see that you have a warrant.
The next thing you know, you’re back in jail, and you must start the process all over again. However, once judges see that you’ve already run once, you likely won’t get released a second time.
Bail Jumping
If you secured your release using a surety bond and then you decide not to show up for court, you have now forced your provider’s hand in arresting you themselves. These agents are what are known as bounty hunters, and they must turn you in or risk losing out on the cash paid to release you.
Not only do you now have to watch out for law enforcement and bounty hunters, but you could force your loved ones to get arrested as well. Anyone deemed aiding your escape will get treated as an accessory, and they will go to jail as well.
You’re Probably Getting Convicted
Although legal disputes require facts to get settled, appearances are also a strong contender. When you fail to appear the first time, it makes you seem that much guiltier in the process.
Running away from your court date all but solidifies you as a guilty party. Your best chance at defending yourself is to arrive in court while failing to appear will likely get you convicted.
Other Punishments
In some states, the judge can suspend your license for not appearing. Other punishments are monetary, with the first being revocation or changes made to your original bail details.
You are all but going to face added charges and fines, making your arrest even more expensive. Your best course of action is to appear, whether you know you’re guilty or not.
