By the early 1700s, enough colonists had arrived to warrant trade posts. Although not populated yet, there were many local indigenous tribes available. The many streams and fertile soil made the region popular among many peoples. By the 1720s, peace treaties were already getting signed between both tribes and settlements.

The land marked by the Susquehanna River westward was agreed to act as settlement land. In return, the indigenous groups wouldn’t need to worry about fighting. As more settlers flocked to the area, peace would unfortunately not last long. It became a worrying foreshadow of events throughout the blossoming nation.

Early European Settlements

Immigrants from Germany were among the first to leave home for Pennsylvania. There soon became joined by an influx of settlers from Ireland, Scotland, and England. Founder William Penn heavily advertised the new settlement in Germany, bringing in many immigrants. With these new neighbors came with them different religious philosophies as well.

The Irish and Scots preferred the southern sections with the Quakers taking northern land. York, proper, was fetching higher and higher rent for their homes. The French and Indian Wars, unfortunately, waged to the west, creating refugees. Local militias eventually joined to support the war efforts.

Winning Independence from England

The late 1700s brought further conflict, this time against the king’s army. The new colonists were not happy about hefty taxes without receiving government representation. The Revolutionary War lasted until 1776 when England finally surrendered in a colossal upset. They had more troops and resources, but not the tactical mind of George Washington.

With war comes innovation, and new technologies emerge from iron and coal. In contrast, the new nation fiercely debated where slavery falls in the constitution. Finally, with tensions bubbling over, the young country nearly fails as quickly as it started. The new Confederate States of America claim independence south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Civil War in York County

As the region sits so close to Maryland, conflict becomes inevitable for Pennsylvania. Many vital battles would take place in or near the state. In 1863, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart led a battle through Hanover. While successful, it winds up becoming the linchpin to Robert E. Lee’s defeat.

Stuart’s troops were too far away to offer support at the Battle of Gettysburg. As a result, Lee is outnumbered and defeated, and the Confederacy crumbles. Unfortunately, the Civil War doesn’t end until it claims its final casualty. As Lincoln’s funeral train rolled through, the cost of the war sinks in.

Pennsylvania’s Continued War Efforts

As the nation attempts to rebuild, it gets called to action soon afterward. World War I kicks off in Germany, with 200 locals deploying to the armed forces. The early 1900s also brought a pandemic in the form of the Spanish Flu. By WWII, manufacturing became the literal driving force at home and abroad.

It quickly became apparent, however, that factory work wasn’t enough for a society. An increased push on education and arts started to flourish. Another batch of armed forces deployed yet again, this time for the Korean War. Although peace was hopeful, the call would continue sounding for Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Today, York County stands as among the most populated metropolises in the country. Our long history of innovation, manufacturing, and agriculture keeps us a leading region. Beatification efforts took root, and we have many museums and educational offerings. We continue seeing universities and significant employers build headquarters here.
