What is York County Jail Doing About COVID-19?

Prisons found themselves as hotspots when the Novel Coronavirus first struck. While we have a better grip on things now, extra precautions are still needed. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to offer inmates products such as hand sanitizer. Therefore, it’s up to the staff and anyone else there to work together to keep everyone safe.

The facility allows for a range of programs and visitors, but many are currently unavailable. Some of the ways that COVID-19 is being managed are through:

  • Influenza Testing
  • Positive Test Isolation

The History of the York County, PA, Jail

Like many detention facilities of its time, the original jail slightly mimics Alcatraz. The first prison was constructed with a castle-like exterior with the then-standard locking barred cells.

The initial jail held inmates until it was replaced in 1855. By then, a stone-walled facility took over until 1906, when brick became the superior material for buildings in the area. Finally, by 1979, the jail took the form it primarily has today. Some improvements have been made, but a lot of the first building remains.
