History of Harrisburg, PA: Abridged

The history of Harrisburg, PA, is storied, with too much to share here. However, we’ll try our best to cover the main points. From early roots as a trade hub to modern amenities, there’s lots to cover. Let’s dive in and start learning more about our region.

Who Founded Harrisburg, PA?

Probably the question on everyone’s mind, who is Harrisburg, PA, named? Well, first, the area belonged to no one in particular. After several thousands of years of indigenous tribes, settlers came in the 1600s. By the 1700s, a pioneer named John Harris settled in, opening a ferry.

By the late 1700s, his son, John Harris Jr., had the region incorporated. He named the area after his father, claiming it Harrisburg.

Becoming the State Capital

Even before permanent settlers came, the area was known as a trading hub. Nomadic peoples and local tribes frequently bartered here. After industrialization, the trend continued with newly formed railroads and shipping. Harrisburg showed such explosive signs of growth it became the capital.

By 1812, the state had adopted it, and construction began immediately on the capitol building. Today, it also has lush vegetation and monument parks.

Growing Pains and Industrialization

During the 1900s, Pennsylvania emerged as a significant source for industrialization. While other areas eventually adopted steel mills, the region developed other materials. The city was well known for railroad shipping, mills, bricks, and lumber. And with the river and waterways, docks also quickly grew.

These same sections are still present, and many continue their past work. Although the names and companies have changed, they are still commercial and industrial parks.

Keeping Harrisburg Beautiful

After years of industrialization, efforts stay needed to keep Harrisburg beautiful. Luckily, there are lots of historical points of interest ready to offer their help. Revitalization efforts can get seen throughout the city, even today. With the main streets, parks, and bridges kept up, it adds lots of classic charm to the area.

Plus, those industrial zones get used more efficiently today, reducing their wastes. You can count on these efforts to continue keeping the city beautiful.

Modern Day Harrisburg, PA
