Famous People in Dauphin County Who Are Pro Athletes

It may sound shocking, but there are numerous famous people in Dauphin County, PA. Many of them, in fact, come from professional sports. Below are some of Gibson Bail Bonds’ favorite local athletes. Tell us if your favorites made the cut.

Harvey Smith

Born in 1871, Harvey Smith was a product of Pennsylvania’s early boom. As a third base player for the Washington Senators, Smith had an impressive career. This local celebrity was fierce on either side of the plate. In addition to defending his bag, Smith’s batting stats are also notable.

His average at-bat was only .275, but remember that this was the early days. He also scored nine stolen bases and 17 RBIs, batting left but throwing right-handed. Harvey Smith was born in Union Deposit and passed away Harrisburg at 91 years old. While he wasn’t the top player, his record is nothing to sneeze at, either.

Frank Sinkovitz

Few athletes get to enjoy being a part of nearly every aspect of their game. Yet, you have Frank Sinkovitz, who made a career from all things football. Before he went pro, Sinkovitz attended Duke University in North Carolina. Once he made the National Football League, he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In six seasons, Sinkovitz performed as both a center and a linebacker. Once retired from playing, he became a referee for the following 26 seasons. In a real career highlight, he officiated Super Bowl XV in 1981. In 1983, he ended his career before passing away six years later.

Sumner Bowman

Sumner Bowman is unique in baseball for pitching nearly 147 innings in two separate leagues. And he did so across three different teams in only two years.  He started with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1890, before playing for Pittsburgh Alleghenys. After leaving the National League, he joined the American League with the Philadelphia Athletics.

This busy left-handed pitcher only won four out of ten games. However, in that time, he scored an impressive 46 strikeouts and an ERA of 5.22. The world might not remember Bowman as the best pitcher, but a vital early player. You can visit his grave at the Oakhill Cemetery in his hometown of Millersburg, PA.

Gary Collins

Few early football players stand as decorated as Gary Collins does. This iconic individual has an impressive record in both college football and professional sports. Starting with the Maryland Terrapins, he played three seasons and set multiple school records. Collins also set Atlantic Coast Conference records and placed 8th for the Heisman Trophy.

By 1962 he played for the Cleveland Browns as a starting punter and a receiver. Over the following few years, he would win many accolades and set impressive stats. After playing, he became an assistant coach for Lebanon Valley College. Following some short broadcast work, he finally left football behind for good.

John Yovicsin

John Yovicsin is another athlete who went from college to pro to coaching. In that time, he proved his skills both on and off the field. Beginning with Gettysburg College, he played two seasons before leaving in 1939. From there, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles five years later as a defensive end.

By 1952, he transitioned into a head coaching position with his alma mater. Then, in 1957 he solidified his legacy by coaching Harvard University until 1970. His most famous game as a coach was the 1968 rivalry between Harvard and Yale. Despite a slow start, Harvard’s team eventually tied Yale at 29-29.

Phil Davis, AKA Mr. Wonderful

Finally, not all athletes are from the Golden Years or with team sports. Phil Davis is an impressive local MMA fighter known for several classes and awards. Making his professional debut in 2008, Davis has since racked an impressive record. Mr. Wonderful has a whopping 22 wins with only five losses and one No Contest.

His orthodox stance reflects his college wrestling days, where he attended four NCAA championships. Each time, he placed within the top five, including first place in 2008. Davis competes in both UFC, and Bellator MMA matches in lightweight and heavyweight divisions. And he has fought as a member of Alliance MMA of Chula Vista, CA.
