While we rely on the brave police officers of our community, they can’t handle everything. Thankfully, the jail’s Community Advisory Committee that was formed in 2019 assists where possible.

What Detainee Programs are Available at the Dauphin County, PA, Jail?

As a larger detention facility, the prison holds a little more than 1,000 inmates. In addition to those being housed are staff, visitors, and visiting professionals, such as attorneys. With such a sheer amount of people to hold safely, rehabilitation efforts have taken priority. Many agree that prisons are seeing too many inmates without the matching resources.

Luckily, our local jail has begun implementing a variety of different detainee programs. Whatever areas of their life they need help in, they can find it with:

These helpful programs are run by volunteers, making them especially challenging to keep up. However, they continue to offer inmates a second chance once they’re released.

What COVID-19 Restrictions Currently Apply?

While the threat of COVID-19 is continuously changing, new restrictions need to be followed carefully. Failing to comply could prevent you from ever returning as a visitor again. Currently, in-person visitations have been suspended, as well as direct appointments with legal counsel. Luckily, there are several ways of keeping in contact, even while staying apart.

The History of the Dauphin County, PA, Jail

Patriot-News reported that the first public land space in Dauphin County was bestowed by John Harris, Jr. There, the settlement’s first jail was established and in use until 1839. Where the Walnut Street parking garage stands is where the original jail was. By 1941, it saw a replacement facility housing 40 15’x7.5′ cells.

In 1899, the facility already needed a facelift and two tiers to expand its housing capacity. Grand juries practically begged for a larger prison by 1920. In 1956, a separate jail was built in the nearby Swatara Township. Since then, the now Dauphin County prison has already seen at least two expansions.
